Introduction

During COVID, Professor Gray, a leading researcher on HIV vaccines and other areas of vaccinology and listed in the Times 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2020 and the Forbes Top 50 Women in Africa, together with her partner Professor Linda Gail-Bekker introduced the Sisonke Phase 3b Implementation Study, which showed vaccine effectiveness in the COVID Beta and Omicron variant and went on to save the lives of hundreds of frontline healthcare workers in South Africa at a time when COVID vaccines were inaccessible to South Africa and other African markets. This session will investigate how the world bridges vaccine and pharmaceutical inequality and access, prepares itself for future pandemics and the role of the community pharmacist in South Africa during public health emergencies and emergency vaccine roll out.
