Safety

Cape Town is a major, modern cosmopolitan South African city. As such, we advise travellers to exercise the same level of vigilance they would in any major city around the world. For the overwhelming majority of the approximately 1.7 million foreign visitors per year, a visit to Cape Town and the Western Cape is a positive and memorable experience. The city is continually investing in and collaborating on initiatives such as increased law enforcement, technology expansion, and safety awareness to provide a secure environment for all.

To ensure a pleasant trip, please keep the following precautions in mind during your travels:

  • Never allow strangers to assist you at ATMs.
  • Avoid walking in deserted and dark places at night.
  • When parking at night, choose secure and well-lit areas with street guards.
  • Keep photocopies of valuable documents in a safe place.

Please download  the safety brochure of the Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID) here.

Mpox

On 14 August 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that an upsurge of mpox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and a growing number of countries in Africa constitutes a public health emergency of international concern under International Health Regulations. The mpox outbreak is currently under control in South Africa, but you are urged to remain vigilant and observe personal hygiene at all times. In the registration area, face masks and sanitisers are available.

For more information, please check the FIP website.
