08:00 – 08:05 | Introduction by the chair |
08:05 – 08:25 | MOTU-0101 – Intentionality: Community pharmacy expansion scheme in Nigeria (The Pharma Care Centre Concept) Mr Adewale Aderemi Oladigbolu Nigeria, spanning over 923,000 km² with a population exceeding 230 million, has a notably low density of pharmacy premises, with only 6,245 registered across its six geopolitical zones as of 2022. This equates to roughly one pharmacy per 148 km² or one pharmacy for nearly 36,000 people, reflecting the global shortage of healthcare workers highlighted in the World Health Organization’s report. The distribution of community pharmacies is particularly uneven, with over 500 of Nigeria’s subnational administrative areas lacking a community pharmacy. Recognising the critical role of community pharmacies in meeting the health needs of the population, the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria has initiated the Pharma-Care Centre concept. This initiative, part of the Community Pharmacy Expansion scheme, aims to serve underserved and underprivileged areas, enhancing access to essential pharmaceutical services. |
08:25 – 08:45 | MOTU-0102 – Patient Education in India: Progress and Challenges Dr Anand Shedge The session will explore the current state and challenges of patient health education in India, emphasising the role of informed patient participation for effective healthcare management. Initiatives such as the Patient Education Protocols and Codes (PEPCs) are standardising the dissemination of health information among healthcare professionals, complemented by the rise of digital platforms that provide patients with accessible educational resources and consultations. Despite these advancements, challenges persist, including limited healthcare worker availability, low health literacy rates, and cultural and language barriers that hinder effective communication and understanding. |
