MOMO-0201 – Belgium as leading example in the management of drug shortages: A multi-angle approach
Dr Michael Storme, Mr Koen Straetmans
Drug shortages are increasingly affecting patients, healthcare providers, and policy globally, impacting essential and common medicines like antibiotics. Belgium has implemented a multi-angle approach through a stakeholders’ working group under the National Competent Authority. This group includes pharmacists, industry representatives, and patient organisations, developing actions and legislative frameworks to manage shortages. They utilise a reporting system (farmastatus.be/pharmastatus.be) to categorise shortages by impact, facilitating effective management. As of February 2024, the majority of shortages were categorised as low impact, highlighting the efficacy of Belgium‘s collaborative approach in minimising disruptions to patient care.
