MOWE-0201 – Transforming recognition: One year of ANZCAP
Dr Kate O’Hara
The Australian and New Zealand College of Advanced Pharmacy (ANZCAP) is a pioneering initiative recognising career progression and specialty skills, enabling Australian and New Zealander pharmacists and technicians from all practice settings to be recognised for their experience and expertise an boosting public awareness of the role of pharmaceutical scientists in healthcare. This session provides an update on the rapid uptake and success of the ANZCAP Foundation Program, the largest, most inclusive and most innovative program of its kind in Australia pharmacy, with the intent to share ideas about advancing pharmacy from this region of the world.

The session will explore the research that shaped the development of ANZCAP’s three recognition pathways. SHPA Vice President Dr Kate O’Hara will describe research began in 2020 through a series of qualitative surveys, workshops, focus groups and expert consultations, which revealed demand for a recognition program that was accessible, affordable, informed by a robust academic framework, relevant to current practice standards, embraced by employers and respected by peers.
The research findings informed ANZCAP’s multi-lateral development, led by a Delphi research advisory council whose insight shaped the structure of Learning Experiences (LXs), which include details, criteria, reflection, goal development evidence and user and/or collaborator declarations. By requiring the completion of both Core and Elective LXs before submitting a portfolio, ANZCAP was able to attribute a fair numerical value and weighting to different clinical activities across care settings and at different levels of seniority, something that had not yet been achieved through comparable programmes.

Dr Kate O’Hara will present the final stages of program development, in which SHPA undertook modelling to ensure equitable and affordable access, significant investment in a custom-built IT platform that was intuitive and accessible, and engagement with stakeholders across health care, government and universities to ensure the purpose of ANZCAP was broadly understood from day one.

08:25 – 08:45 MOWE-0202 – Social determinants of health: Approach from a civil society perspective
Mrs Raquel Martínez García
The session will highlight the impact of social determinants on health and the resulting health inequalities, particularly among vulnerable groups. Highlighting factors such as age, environment, origin, residence, gender, and affective-sexual relations, it outlines necessary measures to mitigate these influences. Promoted by the General Pharmaceutical Council of Spain and researched by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health, the study, reviewed by the Social Advisory Council of the Pharmaceutical Profession (CAS), was developed in three phases: literature review, policy analysis, and data sharing. The resulting recommendations emphasize a “Health in All Policies” approach, integrating social determinants into health research, breaking intergenerational inequity, and promoting health strategies, among others. The session will emphasise the role of community pharmacies, leveraging their proximity, accessibility, and community integration, in addressing these determinants through care, social initiatives, and collaborations.
