Programme
08:00 – 08:05 | Introduction by the chair |
08:05 – 08:25 | MOWE-0101 – How to take humanitarian action during times of emergency: The February 2023 Turkiye Earthquake Mr Arman Uney During the earthquakes in February last year, the Turkish Pharmacists Association reacted swiftly to the crisis. They quickly assembled pharmacists and sent them to the affected cities with donated medicines from all around Turkiye. These pharmacists assessed the most urgent medical needs and facilitated the transfer of essential medicines to the affected areas. Additionally, they dispatched mobile truck pharmacies to ensure ongoing healthcare services. This rapid response and strategic deployment of resources helped provide critical medical assistance to earthquake victims. |
08:25 – 08:45 | MOWE-0102 – Industry-wide codeine-care initiative in South Africa Dr Mariet Eksteen Inspired by Australia’s “Project STOP,” the South African Association of Community Pharmacists (SAACP), recognised the need for a system to control potentially abusive substances, leading to the launch of a nationwide campaign in 2011/12 for voluntary enrolment in a centralised system to monitor purchases of codeine-containing products in community pharmacies. Challenges such as enforcement difficulties and incomplete coverage of the supply chain were addressed by legislative changes in 2017 under the Medicines Act, making it mandatory for healthcare providers to record ID numbers for buyers of higher-scheduled medicines. The Codeine-Care Forum, comprising industry stakeholders including manufacturers, pharmacists, and healthcare professionals, has worked to expand this initiative. This includes mandatory inclusion of all supply chain levels, introduction of warning labels, and public education efforts. |
